Work Packages

WP100 Traffic Management Scenarios

In this work package, various existing large scale traffic scenarios will be selected as background for the successive project implementations. The scenarios will be chosen based on the traffic activity and problematic of the city of Bologna, which is used as test site, focusing on existing technologies and realistic future improvements. In this context, the main traffic black spots and congestion events will be identified and characterised in terms of localisation, traffic densities and temporal occurrence. In this first phase, a general traffic mobility strategy supported by vehicular cooperative systems will be defined to prevent or solve critical situations and optimise the traffic flows distribution.

WP200 Traffic Management Policies and Protocols

Here, efforts will be oriented on developing specific traffic control strategies relying on cooperative technology to be used in the models developed in the project. Traffic metrics quantifying the performance of the example strategies and the effectiveness of the relative cooperative systems will also be defined. These will be in terms of e.g. travel time, congestion, energy consumption and pollution. Finally, the adequate radio communication technologies interfacing the proposed cooperative traffic control strategies with the suitable communication protocols will be selected and analyzed.

WP300 Traffic Modeling

The objectives of this work package are mainly based on the traffic modelling needed by iTETRIS. The adopted SUMO traffic simulation platform will be updated with the final aim of integrating it into a combined traffic and wireless simulation platform. This task will be crucial to evaluate the impact of wireless cooperative systems over large scale situations. To simulate certain applications relying on the use of cooperative information, further extensions will be needed. These extensions will concern rerouting methods not only based on better traffic flows but also on noise/pollution control. In addition, the possibility will be enabled of gathering information about the current dynamic values of the simulated network vehicles and the noise and air pollution generated by them. Finally, an interaction with environmental structures will be implemented in order to allow simulating and evaluating the effects of green light advisory and emergency vehicle signal pre-emption or the benefits of using additional road-side units (RSUs).

WP400 Wireless Communications Simulation Modeling

This work package is intended to develop an open source system-level wireless simulation tool for wireless vehicular communications based on the ns-3 platform. The communication implementation will be compliant with the ETSI, PreDrive and ComeSafety architecture. This approach will ensure the alignment of iTETRIS with the major European efforts and standardisation activities in the ITS field, as well as their interoperability. The developed communication simulation tool will integrate various radio access technologies for both Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I) communication. For this purpose, work will be done on modelling and implementing on ns-3 the standards WAVE (for V2V) and WiMAX, UMTS and DVB (for V2I communication). The activities of this work package will also ensure the accuracy and reliability of V2V and V2I wireless networking simulations. This will be achieved through the inclusion of adequate and realistic radio channel models being able to take into account also the effects of the radio propagation at system level.

WP500 Integration of Traffic and Wireless Simulation Platforms

The tasks to be led here are initially aimed at providing a guideline for both the traffic- and the wireless simulation platforms so that their integration can be made in the most efficient way. For the final integration of the two simulation platforms, trade-offs between complexity, computational costs and efficiency, modeling accuracy and modularity will be considered and analyzed. The appropriate interfaces linking the traffic and communication simulation platforms will be defined and developed as well as the adequate interfaces for the integration of networking and application communication modules developed in the other work packages.

WP600 Routing and Data Distribution Strategies

This work package will basically investigate the network functions supporting an effective and efficient distribution of traffic management relevant information by means of wireless cooperative vehicular communications with multi-hop functionality. Suitable routing protocols such as multi-hop broadcasting, geo-based routing for V2V and broadcasting, unicast routing will be developed to allow traffic information delivery to the addressed areas in limited time. Moreover, work will be made on creating and developing methods for cooperative detection of traffic events based on vehicles’ and RSUs’ capability of sharing various type of sensor data. This cooperative detection of traffic data will help to improve the real time traffic detection by using vehicles as active traffic sensing entities. All the network protocols developed here will be integrated into a specific simulation networking module by using the appropriate SAPs. Finally, these networking functionalities will be tested in large scale environments over the defined scenarios.

WP700 Integration of V2V and V2I Communication Capabilities

The work package 700 is in charge of evaluating several aspects related to the working conditions under which the simulated traffic strategies are supposed to be tested. The potential of Disruption Tolerant Network (DTN) solutions will be investigated to cope with the lack of V2V communication capabilities and low degrees of road side infrastructure deployment. Also, the role to play by the road side infrastructure will be assessed in terms of relaying capabilities for the networking functionalities developed in WP600. In this context, particular attention will be given to the analysis of the deployment level of road side infrastructure required to ensure the effectiveness of traffic management strategies under different V2V systems adoption rates. A study will be conducted on the adequate infrastructure communication systems (3G, WiMAX and DVB) to be used under various operating conditions and traffic densities. Finally, an analysis will be led on the cost/traffic management efficiency trade-offs between V2V-based communication systems and V2V/V2I integrated systems.

WP800 Dissemination & Exploitation

The objectives to be accomplished in this work package are several. iTETRIS aims at facilitating the sharing of knowledge with the other ITS-based projects as well as enhancing the public awareness of the developed technologies and solutions among key user groups, the scientific community and the general audience. Conducing a multi-dimensional dissemination approach is considered a key point for distributing the project concepts and results and attract interest and necessary feedback/involvement from the scientific/technological community, the relevant industrial sectors, the potential customers (in particular road and traffic authorities), the target user groups and their associations, the international standardization bodies and any other stakeholders. For the same purpose it is intended to organize pan-European workshops and contribute to scientific international conferences (accompanied by User Forum meetings). Moreover, iTETRIS wants to identify the industrial potentials and elaborate user awareness and exploitation plans.
